St. James & the Purple Hat Ladies

Our purple hats are being recognized by other pilgrims. We have had perfect strangers ask if they could take our picture. Many need to know where we got them so they can buy one. Even a bicyclist stopped going up a hill to take our picture. People we have gotten to know look for our hats in order find us.

For us, the hats have gone from being a total annoyance to a source of warmth, fly detractor, and sun shield.

Today, as we were walking along the trail, I noticed that our shadows, with purple hats, have taken on a type of St. James silhouette,  which is kind of cool. His silhouette is depicted in many places along the way. Next time I see one, I will take a picture and post it.

Our day was good. 13 miles to Santo Domingo de la Calzada. And we had a busy but enjoyable afternoon. We are in an albergue with 217 others. Our room only has 16.  I believe I am the oldest in the room.

Tomorrow, Villa Mayor del Rio.

  1. Very cute! Why has your hat been an annoyance?

    1. Initially because it was hot and would flop around on the backpack, getting in the way. But, I resolved the flopping issue, and the warmth is now a blessing.

  2. You should be happy with the progress you are making. I'm having a good time tracking you on Google earth. I had to grin with your comment about cooler weather the other day. It hasn't been that warm here for 3 days!!

  7. Sound like you guys have been doing great! I’ve been delinquent in checking since Angela had taken her trip to California and I’ve been running around rustling the kids.

  8. With legs that long you can walk 20 kilometers in an hour. I like Dick's "Purple Hat Chicks". It's perfect!! Don't be too surprised if you're met with a purple carpet welcome when you arrive in Santiago de Compostela. Mike

  9. How wonderful that you're becoming "celebs" on the trail with those purple hats. I love it. That's a HUGE crowd there in the albergue - 217! Hope there was no snoring in your group of 16......

    1. Very regimented at this albergue. Lights out at 10, and then on at 7 and a rooster crowing (story behind famous rooster). Given the number of people, it could have been worse.
