For those of you who have watched the movie, "The Way", there is a segment of the movie where the hikers end in an awesome hotel where special bathrobes, and other amenities are provided. Where Gretchen and I are tonight, makes that place pale in comparison. I took this picture so you all could be assured, Gretchen is ok. Thanks to our wonderful travel agent/friend we are in Madrid in this marvelous place.
But...Madrid...that's not the Camino. The reality is, it would appear that God has another plan for what He would like Gretchen and I to accomplish on this pilgrimage.
It is with sad regret, that I inform you that Gretchen and I must return to the states. Her wound on her back continues to be a problem. It is not healing properly and the doctor in Burgos said we needed to go back to the states so that she can get the appropriate treatment. Traveling from one little village to another with unknown medical support is just not going to provide the consistency of treatment that she needs.
We were blessed to be in Burgos where the voice of reason at hand made us realize we had to bite the bullet, and begin our trip home on Sunday.
We headed to Madrid by bus today after another visit to the doctors to assure everything was stabilized and we will fly back to the states on Monday.
Gretchen has been an amazing patient, and overall is feeling fine. But the wound must be cared for and the cause determined and that needs to be done in the states.

Wow! So Sorry to hear, but health is more important. "The Way" will always be there and you can do it again if that is in God's plan. Next time around you will be experienced.
ReplyDeleteSafe trip home. God Bless
Thanks Dick.
DeleteOh no. I am so sorry to hear this too. So you're coming home tomorrow???? I'll be glad to see you both but you have to be so disappointed.

We will be home Monday night. It is indeed disappointing, but it will be a relief to be able to get proper medical care for Gretchen.
Delete You have had some wonderful blessings on this pilgrimage, but you have definitely made the right decision at this point. See you soon, my dear friend.

Thanks so much Bev. We are confident that we have made the right decision. We are looking forward to seeing you.
DeleteSo sorry you couldn't complete your pilgrimage but what wonderful memories and friends you made while you were there. It was a HUGE accomplishment to get as far along as you did. It is definitely the right decision - one that God led you to as He knows best what's best for us. I hope your trip home is full of love, light and hope and that Gretchen will be 100% in no time. Be proud of your trip - having spent as long as you did on the Trail was a blessing.

Your wonderful comments have been so appreciated Pam.
DeleteWhat a journey this has been for both of you. Life changing. You have made the right choice. Hard as it was. The first few days you are at home feel lost in a way. Not needing to plan for this or that. Not having to be there or here. I really enjoy these first few days being home, reflecting back on the simplicity and freedom you have had. Makes you want more. Good job to you both. Can not wait to see more pictures and their stories. XXOO
ReplyDeleteThanks Randy. Your comment really helped Gretchen and me get a little idea of our actions when we got home. You were right on the money.
DeleteHI guys, so sorry to hear that the wound didn't heal but am so glad you made what I'm sure must have been a hard decision. You are still heros in my book! Hope the long trip home won't be too uncomfortable for you Gretchen. Just wish I could be there to give you both a big hug when you land! Love you, love you, love you!!!

I'm sorry it didn't go as you had planned, but like you said God has another plan. I am so happy for you that you did this most amazing journey. I pray for you both for safe travels and for healing for Gretchen. Love & Prayers, Debbie W-K
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that your trip was interrupted, but glad you're putting health first. What wonderful experiences and memories and people you've met on your journey. Nothing can take that away! Claire K.
ReplyDeleteWell, Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! You both have done a lot and experienced a lot. You made the right decision to return home. When Gretchen is better, we need to have a long lunch so you can tell us stories of your adventure. Give my best to Gretchen. Mike
ReplyDeleteWill do Mike.
